As many of you know I am studying the amazing subject that is theology! I was reading today for the seminar that I have coming up on the resurrection and one of the questions was…If Jesus’ bones were found in Palestine what would be left of the Christian faith?

So to all you budding theologians…What do you think?

Well its simple really, we’d just steal the bones and keep it all hush hush. Or use them to hit non believers over the head with…

Why do we need question “What if?” – the point is they haven’t so it’s not our problem!

it all depends on which Jesus… *also avoids the question*.

there’s no biblical record of where Jesus’ bones ended up post-ascension, right?

…and what’s the deal with Jesus’ ‘resurrection body’? if it were purely physical, there would be a lot of things he couldn’t have done. could it have been separate from his physical body which remained in the earth?

also – would it prove once and for all that he was the ‘missing link’?

just realised I answered that with loads of questions. so for simplicity – make all those sentences into statements, then condemn me as a heretic or whatever.

Actually this question is huuuuuuuge..

Question1: Would it stop me believing in God? Would it give me a licence to do what I want, would I become a different person overnight?

If yes, then has the message of Christ actually changed me at all – except for some outward actions

Question2: Would it mean I have lost faith altogether in God or just lost my faith in the Christian God? (in other words is ‘faith’ what changes a person (ie how to believe, how to percieve, how to think, how to live) or is the message the most important thing (ie fundamental black and white issues which must be adhered to, protected and proclaimed).

Question3: Without a resurrected Christ – what can we really know or trust about God?

Question 4: In discovering something new of Christianity, does that mean God is wrong, or does it mean we have simply restricted God in our previous understanding of Him, bearing in mind to know everything about God is impossible.

Question5: Surely God of the impossible can resurrect Jesus and leave His bones behind? It’s impossible, right?

As St Paul says….

The Resurrection of the Dead
But if it is preached that Christ has been raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? If there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith. More than that, we are then found to be false witnesses about God, for we have testified about God that he raised Christ from the dead. But he did not raise him if in fact the dead are not raised. For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised either.

the whole point of the question was to encourage us to think about the importance of the resurrection in the christian faith…not so much as to look at the what if’s!
